Illwell is a town with a population of 12,722 but this alters daily. This bustling conurbation,
not far from the Midlands, is the result of two smaller towns merging together at a time when it was thought to be a good
idea.
"Once there were two smaller towns, now one big one"
- Illhall and Wellgood Evening News headline 1976.
The self-appointed councils of both Illhall and Wellgood voted
democratically to merge in 1976 and built a commemorative car park (pictured above) to mark the amalgamation. You can still
see the car park today, in the town. In fact you can touch it if you want. A grey concrete block, which is both a testament
to one of the finest architectural decades ever and a great big thing for town's people to marvel, use, and take
pride in.
"The two towns sort of grew into each other. There was only one answer, in my mind"
- Mayor of Illhall 1976 "The car park's fantastic!"
- Roger C. Fineheart (Illwell Hospital formerly Wellgood Hospital)
